Burns Night is annually celebrated in Scotland on or around January 25. It commemorates the life of the bard (poet) Robert Burns, who was born on January 25, 1759. The day also celebrates Burns’ contribution to Scottish culture. His best-known work is Auld Lang Syne. Many types of food are associated with Burns Night. These include cock-a-leekie soup (chicken and leek soup); haggis; neeps (mashed turnips or swedes) and tatties (mashed potatoes); cranachan (whipped cream mixed with raspberries and served with sweet oat wafers); and bannocks (a kind of bread cooked on a griddle).

The inaugural conference will host keynote speakers including Mark Carney, Governor of the Bank of England.

Edinburgh International Science Festival, founded in 1989, is an educational charity that aims to inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to discover the world around them.

On the 30th April, as the sun sets, Beltane Festival actors and dancers will be re-imagining the ancient Celtic festival of Beltane for the thirtieth time. In 2018, the festival will return to the old Leith Theatre from 25 May to 3rd June 2018; with 10 days and nights of music, theatre, visual art, film, dance, spoken word, late-night DJ’s and special events. This year’s event will be turning the derelict Old Leith Theatre and the old State Cinema into a buzzing hub of music, art, performance for a ten-day jam-packed schedule. Music at Hidden Door steps up a level from previous years. A key highlight must surely be Leith’s own sensations Young Fathers, playing a heady ‘homecoming’ gig after their recent UK tour to support their new album, recorded not far from Leith Theatre. The performance is set to show what this amazing venue is truly capable of.
